General information

The objective of the International Seminar "Chinese Literature and Gender" is to provide knowledge by intertwining two main themes: Chinese literature and the various gender issues at different stages of China's historical development. Literary creations in various genres (traditional drama, short and long novels, short stories and poetry) will be reviewed, emphasizing their important contribution to the history of Chinese and world literature. The course will be based on a series of key works and will focus on the role of women as authors and literary characters, as well as the socio-cultural circumstances in which they live. Throughout the nine lectures, the course will seek to recognize the importance of women in literary creation in imperial, modern and contemporary China. The starting point for each lecture will be a masterpiece featuring one or more female characters. Several of the lecturers have translated into Spanish the literary works they will present, therefore, their presentation will combine the view of the academic researcher and the transforming work of the translator. All this with the aim of approaching the masterpieces of Chinese literature and, at the same time, to reach a strong understanding of the changing gender issues in traditional and modern Chinese society.

Aditional Information

Through the International Seminar "Chinese Literature and Genre" the student will gradually gain knowledge of a number of authors and works of primary importance in the history of Chinese literature, as well as a general impression of the historical development of China from the last centuries of the imperial period to the present. Throughout the course, whose sessions are purposely spaced, the student will have the opportunity to engage in readings from the original works and various scholarly materials, provided in advance and, for the most part, in English. Through the question and answer sessions at the end of each lecture, the student will be able to engage in a brief personal communication with the lecturer and thus deepen his/her knowledge on some aspect of particular interest related to the work, the author or the gender issues addressed in the lecture. At the end of the seminar, the student will be able to understand the implications of China's history and culture on its literature and the social position of women. They will also have accumulated a body of basic reading that will provide them with the tools to conduct future research on Chinese literature and gender issues.
