ANC loses ground in South Africa elections
BBC NEWS
South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), is on course to lose its majority in parliament for the first time since it came to power 30 years ago, partial results from Wednesday's parliamentary election suggest.

In charts: 30 years of ANC rule in South Africa
FINANCIAL TIMES
The seventh general election since the end of white-only rule is predicted to be the closest yet, with polls suggesting that the ANC will lose its majority for the first time since it came to power. This would mark the end of an era of unquestioned dominance by the party stretching back through those three decades. It would also force President Cyril Ramaphosa and his leadership into a coalition to retain power, potentially resulting in a deal with one of the opposition parties that have spent the campaign highlighting the ANC’s poor economic performance over more than a decade.

Darker days lay ahead for opposition, minorities after India’s election
ALJAZEERA
For many commentators, an unequivocal victory for Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the foregone conclusion of the ongoing Indian general elections. They insist that the question is not if Modi will win but by how much in terms of seats and votes. Yet, despite this seeming certainty regarding the outcome of these elections, the ruling party and its leader have appeared jittery. And after the winner is declared, I worry, darker and more repressive days may follow.
