General information

The objective of this course is to guide students in their ability to identify China's areas of influence on contemporary political and commercial issues in the Eurasian region through its flagship project: the Belt and Road Initiative.

Participants are expected to learn how the initiative is rooted in the ancient Silk Roads and why China's push for it involves paradigm shifts in terms of trade, inter-regional and international infrastructure that challenge classical concepts in political science and economics.

By the end of the course, students will be able to understand China's current complex dynamics with Europe, Latin America; and the Middle East and Africa (to a lesser extent) within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Graduates will identify trending topics in the study of China's relations with different regions. Upon graduation, they will be able to navigate and critically comment on China's role globally and bring their acquired knowledge to practical areas of interest.

Aditional Information

The topics covered in the "21st Century Silk Road" course are organized into four sections. Each section specifically covers a topic related to the development of the Belt and Road Initiative from its historical antecedent, the ancient Silk Roads, to its current conception as China's foreign policy project.

The four themes: historical and geographical context of the ancient Silk Road, areas of influence of the New Silk Road, technology transfer and infrastructure within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, and opportunities of the 21st Century Silk Road for Latin America, will provide students with comprehensive knowledge on the development of the New Silk Road. Thus, in eight sessions, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the social, economic and political phenomenon that materializes the 21st Century Silk Road.
