She is a Spanish-Lebanese filmmaker and artist currently living in Mexico. Her work has received support from institutions such as the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, the Documentary Fund of the Sundance Institute, the Screen Institute Beirut, and the Doha Film Institute, among others. Her first documentary, Crayons of Askalan, was screened at more than 20 film festivals, including Hot Docs, the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, CPH: DOX and DocsDF. Her audiovisual works have been presented in international centers such as the Center Pompidou in Paris, the Kunst-im-Tunnel Museum in Düsseldorf and in art galleries in various countries. Laila was selected in 2011 by CPH: LAB as an emerging international filmmaker. She is co-founder of LAAVENTURA Audiovisual Productions along with her sister, Nadia Hotait. Laila is a Doctor in Audiovisual Communication, she obtained a master’s degree in Film from San Francisco State University as a Fulbright scholar, and currently she is a film professor at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Studies (ITESM) in Mexico.
