He holds a Master's degree in American History from the Instituto de Investigaciones Doctor José María Luis Mora. He has a Bachelor's degree in History from UNAM. Full-time researcher at the Center for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CIALC). His research interests are: religious diversity in Latin America and relations between Latin American countries during the 19th century. He has given conferences and courses in higher education institutions in Mexico, Latin America, the United States and Europe. He is a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. He currently coordinates, in collaboration with UNAM-Chicago, the Latin American Studies Seminar in which academics from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University, Northeastern Illinois University and Indiana University participate.

He has been a research fellow at Southern Methodist University in the United States and received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship within the Euroculture program. His publications include: Más allá de la diplomacia. Relaciones de México con Bolivia, Ecuador y Perú, and Hombres nuevos. He has been a professor at postgraduate level at UNAM. He has been a guest professor at Southern Methodist University, United States; Deusto San Sebastian, Spain and Göttingen, Germany. He has taught diploma sessions at institutions such as FLACSO Mexico, ITAM and INAP. Within UNAM he has participated in various collegiate bodies, among others the Internal Council of CIALC and the Technical Council of Humanities. He was a member of the Technical Advisory Board of INEHRM.

He is the general coordinator of the Latin American Society for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and of the International Federation for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He is vice-president of the History Commission of the PAIGH and member of the Academy of History of the Balearic Islands. He has been head of department at the DGAPA; academic secretary of the CCyDEL/CIALC and academic secretary of the Coordination of Humanities. He was designated director of the CIALC, for the 2016-2020 term and ratified for a second term, from 2020 to 2024.
