He holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from UNAM. He has postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics, London, England. Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Economics, UNAM; Coordinator of the University Program of Development Studies, Coordinator of the University Seminar on the Social Question; Coordinator of the New Development Course Group. He received the National University Award in the area of Economic and Administrative Sciences in 1998. He is a member of the National System of Researchers Level III, and Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Economics of the UNAM.

He holds honorary doctorate from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, the Universidad de Colima and UNAM. He is a member of the Instituto de Estudios para la Transición Democrática, the Academia Mexicana de Economía Política, the Seminario de Cultura Mexicana and the editorial board of the magazine EconomíaUnam. He coordinates the Grupo Nuevo Curso de Desarrollo at UNAM. He is a weekly contributor to La Jornada and El Financiero and Director of the magazine Configuraciones. He is the author of several books including “Cambiar el rumbo: el desarrollo tras la pandemia”, “Informe del desarrollo en México. Propuestas estratégicas para el desarrollo 2019-2024” and “La perenne desigualdad”, Mexico.
