Master’s in philosophy from the University of Guadalajara. Master of Oriental Studies at The College of Mexico. In 1975 he traveled to India to do doctorate studies at the Hindu University of Benares and in 1976 he entered the doctorate at the Australian National University (Ph.D. 1980).

In 1980 he joined the Center for Asian and African Studies (CEAA) of The College of Mexico as Professor-Researcher, where he has been Academic Coordinator (1981-1985). Director of the Journal of Asian and African Studies and Director of the Center (1997-2000 and 2006-2012). At CEAA he teaches courses and seminars on the History, Culture, Literature, religions and mythology of India. He has published books and articles on those topics, including: India. The Largest Democracy in the World. Coordination of Humanities, UNAM 1986; The Krishna Cycle in the Puranas, Motilal Banarsidas, Delhi 1984; Binding and Release. The Religions of India (co-author David Lorenzen), The College of Mexico, 1996; Prasna Upanishad, Mundaka Upanishad, translations from Sanskrit in EAA, (vol.26, 1991 and vol. 36, 2001).
