Ana María Álvarez

PhD in Economics from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (Venezuela) and PhD in International Economics from l'Université Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne. Her areas of expertise are trade, finance and development, trade negotiations, south-south cooperation, regional integration, the role of development banks, competition law and consumer protection law. She worked from 1991 to 2015 at UNCTAD including the division of globalization, the division of economic cooperation for developing countries and the division of international trade.

At UNCTAD, she inaugurated and managed the first phase of the COMPAL project (UNCTAD' s project on competition and consumer protection in Latin America with the support of SECO, Switzerland) from 2000 to 2010, as well as the research project on trade and competition with the support of IDRC, Canada. She coordinated UNCTAD's contribution related to Aid for Trade and the Global Network of Import and Export Banks and Development Finance Institutions (G-NEXID).

Between 1975 and 1991 she worked as an Economist at the Central Bank of Venezuela and for the Latin American Economic System (SELA). Currently, she continues to carry out research and academic activities, collaborating with United Nations agencies and academic institutions in Latin America, Asia and Africa. She is Director of the United Nations Federal Credit Union - UNFCU - for United Nations employees and their families.
