He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Texas, Austin; a master's degree in Demography from El Colegio de México and a degree in Agricultural Engineering with a specialty in Rural Sociology from the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo. He is a full-time tenured researcher at CRIM and a level II researcher in the National System of Researchers (SNI). In the last 20 years he has worked on topics related to Mexico-US migration, economic and social impact of migrant remittances, debates on the link between migration and development, skilled migration in Latin America and the Caribbean, return migration in Mexico and migration policies in Latin America, and is the author of several books and essays.

He was also coordinator of the UNAM Seminar on Migration Studies and was part of the ad hoc group of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, to integrate the recommendations on the global pact for orderly, regular and safe migration. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Network on Migration and Development. He was appointed as Director of the Regional Center for Multidisciplinary Research (CRIM) for the 2019-2023 term.
