She holds a PhD in Law from UNAM and in History from El Colegio de México, a Master's degree in History from UNAM and El Colegio de México, and a Bachelor's degree in History from UNAM. She joined the Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas in 1996, where she is currently a full-time tenured "C" researcher. She is a member of the National System of Researchers, level III. She founded and, for the last 15 years, has directed two permanent seminars: History of Law and Justice and Sociocultural History of Transgression.

She coordinates working groups in two international projects and has been co-responsible for four projects at UNAM. She is also a research associate at the Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality- Inequiality in Latin America and has spent time at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Casa de Velázquez and at the universities of California and Columbia. She is part of the tutoring staff of the postgraduate programs in History and Architecture, professor of the History program and of the PhD in History at El Colegio de México.

She has taught courses abroad (Jerusalem and Buenos Aires) and undergraduate courses at the FFyL UNAM, Instituto Mora, ENAH and ITAM. She is a permanent member of the Mexican Academy of History and the Mexican Academy of Criminal Sciences and is or has been a member of their boards of directors. She was designated director of the Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas (IIH) for the 2021-2025 term.
